Carnivals are a real part of Swiss festive tradition. Every year they bring a little warmth and joy during the cold winter months. The biggest carnival in the country is without doubt the Basel Carnival. The Morgenstreich kicks of this traditional festival which brings the city to life for three days, the "three most beautiful days of the year". Lanterns and costumes bring a splash of colour to the city.
At carnivals in Switzerland, Guggenmusik is an integral part of festivities. This traditional music combines brass, accordions and percussion instruments.
In Zurich, Basel or Lausanne, children will be overjoyed by the parades and activities going on for families to take part in! But there is plenty for adults too, with the now famous closing party at the Zurich Carnival, the Uuslumpete or the lottery at the Lausanne Carnival.
An ideal family event, carnival time is also a perfect opportunity to have fun with friends. Grab a carnival mask and get into the spirit!
